1. In Holland, we have two words for design. One is vormgeving; in German formgeben. And the other word is ontwerpen; in German entwurf. In the Anglo-Saxon language there’s only one word for design, which is design. That is something you should work out. Vormgeving is more to make things look nice. So for instance, packaging for a perfume or for chocolate in order to make things fashionable, obsolete and therefore bad for society because we don’t really need it. While ontwerpe means, and the Anglo-saxon word, but its stronger, means engineering. That means you as a person try to invent a new thing—which is intelligent, which is clever, and which will have a long-life. And that’s called stylistic durability. It means you can use it for a long time.

The Temper Trap — Sweet Disposition (RAC Remix)

It’s been a slow week. No interviews, no new design jobs coming in, and I’m low on cigarettes.

I’m off to spend the rest of the day sending out about 20 resumes and hoping someone will like me.

  3. A Fresh Coat Of Paint:

Finally got this blog up and running after the last one had a meltdown. A year of posts gone after a hard drive failure AND a site deletion. I have the greatest luck.

So I just started anew on Tumblr, I like the interface more and I can quickly post things to it when I’m on the go. Plus I can buy a theme I’ve been eyeing for it.

Don’t get me wrong, I can code the shit out of a theme, I would. I just don’t want to. It’s tedious work and right now I want to focus all my time on finding a job.

Freelance is fun and a great way to start out, but once you reach a certain point, living on few freelance gigs is not enough. Money is tighter than ever.

But it’s not just the money thats making me look for a fulltime job, it’s the opportunity to work with other designer and people. Freelance means working alone and having a few moments to bounce ideas off people, but in a fulltime studio type job, I’d be able to throw ideas around, collaborate, actually have some social interaction instead of yelling at my Macbook when it freezes.

I just want an opportunity to show what I can, to prove that I know my stuff and maybe make a few people laugh with my presence. Not that I’m funny. I’m just terribly awkward.

I think I’ll end the day with a song.
